Robots and Drones Grades 6 to 8

10 weeks Coming

Leading the mission.

Robots and Drones Grades 6 to 8 is a 10-week course on how robots and drones sense, decide and move. Rocket, Raven and Nova build Scout, a cardboard-box rover, and program it by being the robot on a masking-tape course in the hallway. Week by week Scout gains a touch bumper, a light eye for following a line, an echo ear for measuring distance, wheels as actuators and a feedback loop that keeps it on track. Students write algorithms as flowcharts and pseudocode, use loops and if-then rules, and find and fix bugs. Then they ask how Nova flies: propellers push air down and the air pushes back, and propeller pairs spinning opposite ways keep a quadcopter from twirling. NASA's Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter are the real examples. Students learn the FAA's rules for flying a drone safely, and finish with the Delivery Challenge: a design they test, improve and report on. Short daily lessons with checked answers, an unplugged Robot Lab each week and a Saturday Field Day for the family. No kit, drone, app or account needed, and the course never asks anyone to fly a drone. 100% free, start to finish.
