Thursday: The Sign-Up Sheet

Raven pins the finished sign-up sheet above the Numbers Desk. "Forty kids. Four games. Every kid picked one."

Rocket reads the tallies. "Relay 10. Hoops 16. Sack hop 8. Puzzle 6."

"Hoops wins," he says. "Sixteen is the most."

"What do you notice if you say each one as a percent?" Raven asks.

Rocket scales each fraction to 100. "Relay 25%. Hoops 40%. Sack hop 20%. Puzzle 15%."

Nova hovers near the sheet, her light pausing on the last column. "What do the four percents add to?"

"One hundred," Rocket says. "Every kid is in there exactly once. That is how I know I did it right."

Read the sheet

These counts are the crew's own made-up Field Day sign-ups. The whole is 40 kids, the 100%.

Each game's count is a part. Scale each part to 100 to get its percent, or divide by 40 and multiply by 100.

The percents of the parts add to 100% when every kid chose exactly one game. That is a built-in check.

What the four percents add up to
Try it
Ask four or five family members which of the four games they would pick. Record only the choices.
Turn each count into a percent of your total. Do the percents add to 100?
Safety first
Ask only family and friends your family already knows. Record the game picked, never who picked it.
Draw the sign-up sheet as a hundred grid, shading each game a different color so the percents add to 100%.

Sharp reading. Tomorrow you find percents all around you and review the week.
