Mission Quest

Mission Quest: Graduation demo
// ArrayList, sorting, searching and recursion in Java; then a code review and the FieldSim release
⏱ about 30 min

Saturday: Mission Quest: Graduation Demo

The maker space is decorated with paper rovers, and the Larkspur test field is chalked on the floor. Today is the FieldSim demo.

Comet straightens her bomber jacket. "We made a whole simulator," she says. "Samples, a rover, a grid, searching, sorting and recursion."

Wren checks his watch and his notes. "What does the evidence say? Every program ran, every test passed, and we read it all in Java too."

Nova floats above the field and lights up Pip's route, one cell at a time. "How can I help?" she asks. "The demo is yours. I will just hold the light."

Comet and Wren turn to you together. "Lead programmer, show your family what you built."

◇ THE FIELDSIM DEMO
You need: a computer with your fieldsim folder, plus paper and a pencil for your family member.
Run fieldsim.py and explain the grid: R is Pip, # is a rock, and * is a sample spot still waiting.
Pick one class, Sample, Rover or FieldGrid. Explain what it stores and one thing it can do.
Pick one algorithm, a sort, a search or reachable. Explain its steps with paper, cards or coins.
Run test_fieldsim.py and explain what one test checks.
Ask your family member to write a new command string, using only F, L and R. Predict where Pip ends, then try it in fieldsim_try.py.

What this course prepares for

AP Computer Science A is a course that uses Java and centers on object-oriented programming.

This course prepares for the ideas in it. You built classes and objects, used lists and grids, wrote searches, sorts and recursion, and read them in Java.

Which FieldSim file holds the class that guards Pip's battery?
Which language does AP Computer Science A use?
Which file did you save as the FieldSim release?
For a grown-up
Congratulations: your student has finished Python Programming Grades 11 to 12 and shipped FieldSim, a text simulator in real Python.
This course prepares for the ideas in AP Computer Science A. It is not affiliated with College Board.
Talk about it: ask which part of FieldSim they are proudest of, and what they would build next.

Congratulations, lead programmer. Comet, Wren and Nova celebrate every trace, test and fix you made along the way. FieldSim is yours.
