Week 01 · Vowel Ridge

Sound Hunt

Sound Hunt: short and long
// Short and long vowels in one-syllable words
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Sound Hunt

Ferris the Fox trots back down the ridge.

"Sound Hunt day!" says Ferris.

"Find things at home with short vowels, like cup and bed."

"Then find things with long vowels, like cake and a boat."

"Ready, set, go!"

  1. A vowel shut in by a consonant is often short: hop, bed.
  2. A silent e makes the vowel say its name: hope, kite.
  3. A vowel team makes one long sound: rain, seat, boat, night.
  4. Look at the vowel before you read the word.
