Number Hunt
// Coordinate grids, two number patterns, shape families and a big review
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Today is the last day of the Number Trail.

Ferris the Fox and all his friends meet at the end of the trail, under a tall pine.

"Let us hunt for grids and shapes one more time," says Ferris.

Rosie the Rabbit cheers. "Then we will celebrate everything we learned this year!"

Bennie the Bear smiles at everyone. "You worked hard and kept trying. That is how math grows."

Hunt for grids and shapes

Grids and shapes are all around your home.

Look for them with a grown-up.

Write what you find in a notebook.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a grid, like a tile floor, a calendar or a window with panes.
Pick a corner as the origin. Name one spot with an ordered pair.
Find a square, a rectangle that is not a square, and a parallelogram.
Find a box and estimate its volume.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A coordinate grid with point H at (5, 2)What are the coordinates of point H?
Start at 0 and add 5. What is the 4th term?
Which is always true?
◇ HIDE A POINT WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you draws a grid from 0 to 6 and hides one point on it.
Take turns guessing an ordered pair, like (2, 5).
Answer with "too far across," "too far up" or "found it!"
Play until you both find the hidden points.
On paper, draw your favorite thing you learned on the whole Number Trail.
For a grown-up
This week your child plotted points on a coordinate grid and graphed two number patterns.
They also sorted shapes into families, like squares inside rectangles.
This is the last week of Number Trail Grade 5.
Ask them to teach you one idea they are proud of.

Hooray! You finished the whole Number Trail. Great job, trail friend!
