Thursday: Hazel's bookshelf

Chris the Coyote hangs his satchel on a branch and sits on a stump.

"Gather round for the tale of Hazel's bookshelf," he says.

"Hazel built a shelf from two wooden boxes, side by side."

"The big box was 4 feet long, 2 feet deep and 3 feet tall."

"The small box was 2 feet long, 2 feet deep and 1 foot tall."

"Ferris asked how much space the whole shelf took up."

"Hazel smiled. She found each volume, then she added them together."

Story: Add the volumes

A box of unit cubes: 4 long, 2 deep and 3 tall
A box of unit cubes: 2 long, 2 deep and 1 tall

Big box: 4 × 2 × 3 = 24 cubic feet.

Small box: 2 × 2 × 1 = 4 cubic feet.

Together: 24 + 4 = 28 cubic feet.

The boxes do not overlap, so we can add their volumes.
