Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Change units, then plot fraction measurements
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Lizzy the Lizard and Bennie the Bear set off with a tape measure and a notebook.

"Units are printed everywhere," says Lizzy, lifting her magnifying glass.

"Bottles show milliliters. Bags show grams or ounces."

Bennie points to a ruler on the table. "And rulers show inches and centimeters."

"Let us find them all," says Lizzy. "Then we will make a line plot."

Hunt for units at home

Go on a hunt with a grown-up.

Look for units on labels, rulers and measuring cups.

Write each measurement and its unit in a notebook.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a label in milliliters or liters. Change it to the other unit.
Find a label in grams or ounces.
Measure 6 spoons or forks to the nearest 1/4 inch.
Make a line plot of the 6 lengths.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
500 milliliters = ? liters
2 feet = ? inches
A line plot has 3 X marks above 1/4. What is their total?
◇ MEASURE WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you measures your hand span in centimeters.
Change both lengths to millimeters.
Find the difference between your two spans.
Now measure your heights and change them to meters.
On paper, draw the line plot you made on your hunt.
For a grown-up
This week your child converted units, like 5 centimeters = 0.05 meters.
To change to a smaller unit we multiply, and to a bigger unit we divide.
They also made line plots of measurements in halves, fourths and eighths.
Ask them how many inches are in 2 1/2 feet, and how they know.

Great hunting! Next week Hazel helps us build boxes and find volume.
