Number Hunt
// Scaling, fraction stories and sharing with unit fractions
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Rosie the Rabbit and Bennie the Bear set off with a notebook.

"Fractions are hiding all over the house," says Rosie.

"Measuring cups say 1/2 and 1/4. Rulers have halves and quarters."

Bennie opens the notebook. "Let us find some and resize them."

"What is half of a 1/4 cup?" he asks.

Rosie thinks hard. "That is 1/4 ÷ 2, so 1/8 of a cup!"

"Exactly," says Bennie. "Let us hunt for more."

Hunt for fractions at home

Go on a hunt with a grown-up.

Look for fractions on measuring cups, spoons and rulers.

Write each fraction you find in a notebook.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a measuring cup or spoon with a fraction on it.
Find the 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch marks on a ruler.
Find a stack of 8 things and make a stack 3/4 as tall.
Find something you can share into 4 equal parts.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Without multiplying: is 5/3 × 24 more than, less than or equal to 24?
3/4 × 8 = ?
Rosie shares 1/4 cup of seeds into 2 equal piles. How much is in each pile?
How many 1/2 cup scoops are in 3 cups of water?
◇ SCALE WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you writes a whole number from 4 to 24.
Pick a fraction card: 1/2, 3/4 or 1 1/2.
Guess if the product will be bigger or smaller than your number.
Multiply together to check your guess. Take turns five times.
On paper, draw a measuring cup and mark 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4.
For a grown-up
This week your child learned that multiplying by a fraction resizes a number.
A fraction less than 1 shrinks it, and one greater than 1 stretches it.
They also divided unit fractions, like 1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/6 and 3 ÷ 1/4 = 12.
Ask them to explain why 3/4 of 12 is less than 12.

Great hunting! Next week Lizzy helps us measure and convert units.
