Thursday: The clover bed

Chris the Coyote sits by the creek and opens his storyteller's satchel.

"Once, Donnie built a little bed for clover beside his favorite stream," he says.

"It was 3/4 of a meter long and 2/3 of a meter wide."

"Donnie wanted to cover it with flat stones, each one shaped like a small rectangle."

"Each stone was 1/4 of a meter long and 1/3 of a meter wide."

"How many stones would fit? And what was the area of the bed?"

Chris smiles. "Donnie solved it slowly, one row at a time."

Learn it: area with fraction sides

A square meter can hold 4 stones across and 3 stones down. That is 12 stones.

So each stone covers 1/12 of a square meter.

The bed is 3/4 meter long, so 3 stones fit along it.

It is 2/3 meter wide, so 2 stones fit across it.

3 × 2 = 6 stones, so the area is 6/12 of a square meter.

That matches multiplying the sides: 3/4 × 2/3 = 1/2.

The picture shows one square meter cut into 12 stones, 3 rows of 4.

1/2 × 3/4 = 3/8?
3 × 2/5 = 1 1/5?
WHY THIS EXERCISE1/4 × 1/3 is 1/12, because 12 of those stones cover one square meter.
Try it
Find a small book or a tile at home.
Measure its sides in feet, to the nearest half or fourth foot, with a grown-up.
Multiply the two sides to find its area in square feet.
Is the area more or less than one square foot?
Draw the clover bed covered with 6 stones, 2 rows of 3.

What a story! Tomorrow Freddy has a fraction game.
