Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Share, then multiply fractions
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Donnie and Bennie walk slowly through the meadow with a notebook and a ruler.

"Let us look for things we can share, and things we can measure," says Donnie.

"If 3 friends share 2 apples, each gets 2/3 of an apple."

Bennie points to a flat rock. "And if this rock is 1/2 meter by 3/4 meter, we can find its area."

Donnie nods slowly. "Let us hunt for fractions all around us."

Hunt for sharing and multiplying

Look around your home with a grown-up.

Find things you could share equally, like apples, crackers or pencils.

Find flat things you could measure, like a book, a tile or a mat.

Try it: Number Hunt
Pick a number of crackers or apples, and a number of people to share them.
Write the share as a division and as a fraction, like 2 ÷ 3 = 2/3.
Measure a small book in feet, to the nearest fourth of a foot.
Multiply the two sides to find its area in square feet.
Find 1/2 of the area. That is a fraction of a fraction.

◇ FRACTION CHALLENGE WITH A GROWN-UP
One person picks a number of things to share, from 1 to 9.
The other picks a number of people, from 2 to 9.
Write the share as a fraction, and check by multiplying.
Take turns four times. Then multiply two fractions together.
Draw something you shared or measured, and write the fraction.
For a grown-up
This week your child learned that a fraction is a division, like 3 ÷ 4 = 3/4.
They multiplied fractions by whole numbers and by other fractions, and found areas.
Ask: "If 4 people share 3 apples, how much does each get?"
Ask them to explain why 2/3 × 3/4 is less than 3/4.

Great hunting! Next week Rosie the Rabbit shows how multiplying can make things bigger or smaller.
