Monday: Fractions are division

Donnie the Deer steps softly into the meadow with three loaves of bread in his satchel.

Four friends are waiting on the picnic blanket: Bennie, Lucy, Riley and Hazel.

"I want to share these 3 loaves equally among 4 friends," Donnie says slowly.

"But 3 is less than 4. How can everyone get the same amount?"

Bennie the Bear thinks for a moment.

"Cut each loaf into 4 equal parts," he says. "Then each friend takes one part from every loaf."

Donnie looks closely at the pieces and smiles.

Learn it: a fraction is a division

Each loaf is cut into 4 equal parts, so each part is 1/4 of a loaf.

Each friend gets 1 part from each of the 3 loaves.

That is 3 parts of 1/4, or 3/4 of a loaf.

So 3 ÷ 4 = 3/4.

Three loaves, each cut into four equal parts, with one part of each shaded

Any fraction is a division: the numerator divided by the denominator.

Check: 3/4 × 4 = 3. Four friends with 3/4 each have 3 loaves in all.

When the numerator is bigger, the answer is more than 1. 7 ÷ 2 = 7/2 = 3 1/2.

WHY THIS EXERCISE2 ÷ 5 is 2/5, because each of 5 people gets 2 fifths.
Try it
Cut 3 paper strips the same length. Each strip is one whole.
Fold each strip into 4 equal parts, and cut along the folds.
Share the pieces equally among 4 people or toys.
How much of a strip does each one get?
Draw 3 loaves cut into fourths, and color what one friend gets.

Lovely sharing! Tomorrow Donnie multiplies a fraction by a whole number.
