Number Hunt
// Add, subtract, multiply and divide to hundredths
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Bruce and Bennie set off down the trail with a notebook and a tape measure.

"Decimals hide in lots of places," says Bruce.

"Water bottles say 0.5 liter or 1.5 liters. Rulers show tenths of a meter."

Bennie opens the notebook to a fresh page.

"Let us find decimals, write them down, and then add, subtract, multiply or divide them."

Bruce grins. "That is today's challenge stop!"

Hunt for decimals

Look around your home with a grown-up.

Find decimals on bottles, jars and measuring tools.

Write each decimal and what it measures.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find two bottles or jars with liters or kilograms written as decimals.
Add the two amounts.
Subtract to find how much more one holds than the other.
Measure the length of a table in meters, like 1.35 meters.
Multiply to find the length of two tables placed end to end.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
0.5 + 1.5 = ?
2.25 - 0.5 = ?
3 × 0.45 = ?
1.8 ÷ 0.6 = ?
ONE MORE ROUND
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A table is 1.35 meters long. How long are two tables placed end to end?
What is 10 hundredths equal to?
2.4 ÷ 0.4 = ?
◇ DECIMAL CHALLENGE WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you writes a decimal with tenths and hundredths, like 3.47.
Add the two decimals. Then subtract the smaller from the larger.
Check each other by counting up or by adding back.
Take turns four times.
Draw two things you found with decimals on them, and write their sum.
For a grown-up
This week your child added, subtracted, multiplied and divided decimals to hundredths.
Ask them to line up decimal points out loud when they add or subtract.
When they multiply, ask whether the answer makes sense with a quick estimate.
When they divide, ask them to check by multiplying.

Great hunting! Next week Oliver the Owl brings puzzles with parentheses.
