// Read, write, compare and round
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Chris the Coyote and Bennie the Bear walk through the kitchen of the trail cabin.

"Decimals are hiding everywhere," says Chris. "Let us find them."

Bennie picks up a water bottle. "This says 0.5 liters."

Chris finds a bag of rice. "This one says 0.907 kilograms!"

"Which is the greater number?" asks Bennie.

Chris lines up the places in his notebook. "0.907 is greater than 0.500."

"Good comparing," says Bennie. "Just remember that liters and kilograms measure different things."

Hunt for decimals

Look at labels, rulers and measuring cups with a grown-up.

Find decimals with tenths, hundredths or thousandths.

Write each one down.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find at least four decimals on labels around your home.
Read each one out loud the long way.
Put them in order from least to greatest.
Round each one to the nearest whole number.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How do you read 0.907?
0.5 ? 0.907
Round 0.907 to the nearest tenth.
ONE MORE ROUND
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A bottle holds 1.25 liters. How many hundredths are in 0.25?
Round 1.25 liters to the nearest tenth of a liter.
◇ DECIMAL SHOWDOWN
Each of you writes a decimal with up to three places on a card.
Show your cards at the same time.
Read both decimals out loud.
Decide together which one is greater, and explain why.
Play five rounds. Then round each number to the nearest tenth.
Draw a label you found and write its decimal in words.
For a grown-up
This week your child read, wrote, compared and rounded decimals to thousandths.
A common mix-up is thinking more digits means a bigger number.
Ask them which is greater, 0.6 or 0.58, and why.
Listen for this: 6 tenths is more than 5 tenths.

Great hunting! Next week Lucy helps us multiply big numbers.
