Thursday: The map and the water

Chris the Coyote opens his storyteller's satchel and pulls out a folded map.

"One summer, Bennie planned a long walk to the waterfall," Chris begins.

"On his map, the trail was 2.5 centimeters long."

"Each centimeter on the map stood for 100 meters on the real trail."

"So Bennie multiplied 2.5 by 100 and got 250 meters."

"At the waterfall, he filled a big jug with 34.5 liters of water."

"He shared it equally into 10 buckets for his friends."

"Each bucket got 3.45 liters," Chris says with a grin.

Learn it: decimals times and divided by powers of 10

2.5 × 10 = 25. The digits move one place to the left.

2.5 × 100 = 250. The digits move two places to the left.

34.5 ÷ 10 = 3.45. The digits move one place to the right.

34.5 ÷ 100 = 0.345. The digits move two places to the right.

The decimal point stays still. It is the digits that move.

Try it
Find a ruler with centimeters and millimeters.
There are 10 millimeters in 1 centimeter.
Measure a spoon in centimeters, like 15.5 cm.
Multiply by 10 to find its length in millimeters.
Draw Bennie's map. Label the trail 2.5 cm and the real trail 250 m.

What a story! Tomorrow Freddy has a review game for the whole week.
