Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Place value and powers of 10
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Bennie the Bear and Rosie the Rabbit walk to the edge of the meadow.

"Today we hunt for tens, hundreds and thousands," says Bennie.

Rosie spots a stack of paper by the cabin door. "This pack says 100 sheets!"

"If we had 10 packs, how many sheets would that be?" asks Bennie.

Rosie counts on her paws. "One thousand sheets!"

"And one sheet is one hundredth of the pack," says Bennie with a nod.

They set off to find more numbers hiding around them.

Hunt for powers of 10

Look around your home with a grown-up.

Find things that come in tens, hundreds or thousands.

Look at rulers, packs of paper and measuring cups.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a pack that holds 10 or 100 of something.
Work out how many 10 packs would hold.
Find a ruler. How many millimeters make 10 centimeters?
Find a number with 4 or more digits on a box or a book.
Say what each digit is worth.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
In 5,824, what is the value of the 8?

ONE MORE ROUND
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A pack holds 100 sheets. How many sheets are in 10 packs?
One sheet is what part of a pack of 100?
◇ SLIDE THE DIGIT
Each of you writes a digit from 1 to 9 on a small card.
Make a place value chart from thousands to hundredths.
Put your card in a place and say its value.
Your partner slides it one place and says the new value.
Take turns. Say "ten times" or "one tenth" each time.
Draw something you found that comes in tens or hundreds.
For a grown-up
This week your child learned that each place is worth ten times the place to its right.
They multiplied and divided by 10, 100 and 1,000, and met exponents.
Ask them why 3.5 × 100 = 350.
Listen for this: the digits move two places to the left.

Great hunting! Next week Chris helps us read and compare decimals.
