Ferris the Fox spreads his trail map across a flat rock.
"Look, these two paths run side by side and never meet," he says.
"Those are parallel," says Bennie the Bear. "And this path crosses the creek at a square corner."
"Then the path and the creek are perpendicular," Ferris says slowly, trying the new word.
Bennie points to the shapes drawn on the map: a cabin, a dock and a tent.
"We can sort shapes by their lines and their angles," he says. "Let us try."
A point is an exact spot. A line goes on and on in both directions.
A line segment is part of a line with two endpoints. A ray has one endpoint.
Parallel lines never meet. They stay the same distance apart.
Perpendicular lines meet to make a right angle.
Intersecting lines cross at a point.
We sort shapes by parallel sides, perpendicular sides and right angles.
A right triangle is a triangle with one right angle.
