Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Measure, add and sort, then a big review
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Ferris the Fox and Bennie the Bear take one last walk along the trail.

"Let us hunt for angles, lines and symmetry," says Ferris, folding his map.

They spot right angles on the cabin windows and parallel boards on the dock.

A butterfly lands on a fern. Its two wings match like a fold.

"That butterfly has a line of symmetry," says Bennie.

Ferris smiles at the whole trail behind them. "We found math everywhere we looked."

Hunt for angles and lines

Angles hide in doors, windows, books, clock hands and folding chairs.

Parallel and perpendicular lines hide in floors, shelves and fences.

Leaves, faces and many letters have lines of symmetry.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find 3 right angles, 1 acute angle and 1 obtuse angle at home.
Find 2 parallel lines and 2 perpendicular lines.
Find something with a line of symmetry, like a leaf or a window.
Make a list of everything you found.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
An angleWhat kind of angle is this?
Two angles side by side, marked 120° and ?120 + ? = 180
A squareHow many lines of symmetry does this shape have?
A trapezoidHow many pairs of parallel sides does this shape have?
◇ ANGLE HUNT WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you makes an angle with two pencils.
The other person names it: acute, right, obtuse or straight.
Use the corner of a book to check a right angle.
Take turns five times.
Then talk about your favorite thing you learned on the trail.
Draw your favorite thing from the hunt. Mark its angles or its line of symmetry.
For a grown-up
This week your child learned that angles are measured in degrees, and that angles add.
They sorted shapes by parallel and perpendicular sides and found lines of symmetry.
This is the last week of Number Trail Grade 4. Celebrate their hard work!
Ask them which week was their favorite, and why.

You finished the trail! Bennie and all your friends are so proud of you.
