Saturday: Number Hunt

Riley and Bennie set off with a notebook, a pencil and a paper strip.

"Today we hunt for fractions at home," says Riley.

"Look for things split into equal parts, like a window or an egg carton."

Bennie adds, "Then find two ways to name the same part."

"Six eggs in a carton of twelve is 6/12. It is also 1/2!"

Riley grins. "A fraction with two names is my favorite kind of puzzle."

Hunt for equal fractions

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find things cut or split into equal parts.

Name each fraction two ways, if you can.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find an egg carton. Put an object in 6 of the 12 cups. Name the fraction two ways.
Find a window with equal panes. What fraction of the panes is on the top half?
Fold a napkin into fourths, then eighths. Color 1/4 of it.
Compare two fractions you found. Which is greater?

◇ FRACTION MATCH-UP WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you writes a fraction with a denominator of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 or 12.
Turn both fractions into twelfths.
The greater fraction scores a point.
If they are equal, you both score!
Play five rounds and talk about how you decided.
Draw one thing you found and write two names for its fraction.
For a grown-up
This week your child found equivalent fractions and compared fractions.
They multiplied the numerator and denominator by the same number to make equal fractions.
They compared with common denominators, common numerators, and the benchmark 1/2.
Ask them why 2/4 and 4/8 name the same amount.

Great hunting! Next week Donnie the Deer helps us add and subtract fractions.
