Saturday: Number Hunt

Oliver and Bennie walk through the meadow with a notebook and a pencil.

"Today we hunt for things to share," says Oliver.

"Count a big group, then decide how to share it equally."

Bennie adds, "And look closely at what is left over."

"Sometimes we round up, and sometimes we leave the remainder alone."

Oliver hoots softly. "A remainder is a clue. It tells us what to do next."

Hunt for things to share

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find a group of things you can count.

Write a division sentence that shares them equally.

Try it: Number Hunt
Count the socks in a drawer. How many pairs? Is one left over?
Count the books on a shelf. Share them among the people at home.
Count the steps on a stair or path. Divide by 3 for three equal parts.
For each one, decide what the remainder means.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A sockA drawer has 17 socks. How many full pairs is that?
What is 85 ÷ 4?
3,624 ÷ 6 = ?
◇ SHARE WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you picks a number from 50 to 99.
Divide your number by 4, and check with multiplication.
Tell each other the quotient and the remainder.
Make up a short story where the remainder matters.
Take turns three times.
Draw one group you shared. Show the equal parts and the remainder.
For a grown-up
This week your child divided numbers up to four digits by one digit.
They split the dividend into parts, divided each part, and added the quotients.
They also decided what a remainder means in a story.
Ask them to check a division by multiplying the quotient by the divisor.

Great hunting! Next week Riley the Raccoon brings fraction puzzles.
