Week 05 · Multiply bigger numbers

Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Break numbers apart by place value
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Bruce and Bennie pack a notebook, a pencil and a small basket.

"Today we hunt for equal groups around the house," says Bennie.

"Egg cartons, sock pairs, muffin tins and window panes all count."

Bruce adds his own twist. "Find a big group, then multiply it by a small one."

"Then try two numbers with two digits each," he says.

Bennie smiles. "Estimate first, then multiply. That way we can check."

Hunt for things to multiply

Walk around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Look for things that come in equal rows or groups.

Write a multiplication sentence for each one you find.

Try it: Number Hunt
An egg carton holds 12 eggs. How many eggs fit in 8 cartons? (8 × 12 = 96)
Count the panes in one window. Multiply by the number of windows.
Count the pages in a chapter book. Multiply by 3 for three books like it.
Find one product with two digits times two digits.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
An eggAn egg carton holds 12 eggs. How many eggs in 8 cartons?
4 × 1,500 = ?
24 × 13 = ?
◇ MULTIPLY WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you writes a two-digit number.
Estimate the product together by rounding to the nearest ten.
Then each of you finds the exact product with an area model.
Compare answers. Are they close to your estimate?
Take turns three times.
Draw one group of things you found and write its multiplication sentence.
For a grown-up
This week your child multiplied up to four digits by one digit.
They also multiplied two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers.
They split numbers by place value and added the partial products.
Ask them to estimate first, then explain each box of an area model.

Great hunting! Next week Oliver the Owl helps us divide.
