Number Hunt
// Multiplication as comparing
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Lucy and Bennie take a slow walk around the meadow.

"Let us hunt for things that are some times as many as other things," says Bennie.

Lucy spots a clover with 3 leaves and a flower with 6 petals.

"The flower has 2 times as many!" she says.

Bennie finds a tall stick and a short twig.

He lays the twig along the stick, again and again.

"This stick is about 4 times as long as the twig," he says.

Hunt for times as many

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find two groups or two lengths to compare.

Ask: how many times as many, or how many times as long?

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a short thing, like a spoon or a crayon.
Find something longer, like a table or a rug.
Lay the short thing along the long thing and count.
Write an equation that compares them.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A clover has 3 leaves. A flower has 6 petals. How many times as many petals?
A twig is 9 inches. A stick is 4 times as long. How long is the stick?
Which equation shows: 36 is 4 times as many as 9?
8 × ? = 48
◇ TIMES AS MANY HUNT
Each of you finds two groups of things at home.
Count each group.
Tell your partner how many times as many one group has.
Check each other by multiplying.
Draw two things you compared and write an equation.
For a grown-up
This week your child used multiplication to compare amounts.
35 = 5 × 7 means 35 is 5 times as many as 7.
Ask them how 3 more than 4 differs from 3 times as many as 4.
Dividing finds how many times as many, or the smaller amount.

Great hunting! Next week Samantha helps us explore factors and multiples.
