Week 02 · Add and subtract big numbers

Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Place by place, with regrouping
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Chris and Bennie walk to the trail map near the meadow.

The map shows how far it is from one stop to the next.

"The pond is 1,275 meters from the gate," reads Chris.

"And the hilltop is 2,640 meters past the pond."

Bennie pulls out a notebook. "So how far is the hilltop from the gate?"

Chris writes the numbers in a column and adds them place by place.

"3,915 meters," he says. "What a walk!"

Hunt for numbers to add and subtract

Look around your home with a grown-up for numbers with three or more digits.

Try page numbers, distances on a map or numbers on a calendar.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find two big numbers at home or outside.
Write them in a column and add them.
Then subtract the smaller one from the larger one.
Check your subtraction by adding.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The pond is 1,275 meters from the gate. The hilltop is 2,640 meters past it. How far is the hilltop?
How many more meters is 2,640 than 1,275?
3,000 - 1,458 = ?
29,870 + 45,360 = ?
◇ NUMBER TRAIL WITH A GROWN-UP
Pick a starting number between 1,000 and 9,000.
Take turns adding or subtracting a number your partner chooses.
Write each step in a column.
After five turns, check each step by doing the opposite.
Draw a trail map with two distances and write their sum.
For a grown-up
This week your child added and subtracted numbers up to one million.
They lined up the places and regrouped when needed.
Ask them to check a subtraction by adding the answer back.
Estimating first helps them notice a mistake.

Great hunting! Next week Lucy helps us compare with times as many.
