Monday: Add, place by place

Chris the Coyote has been counting his steps along the trail.

"From the den to the pond, I took 3,458 steps," he says.

"From the pond to the meadow, I took 2,375 more."

He scratches his ear. "That is a lot of steps to add in my head."

Bennie the Bear picks up a stick and writes the numbers in the soft dirt.

"Put one number under the other," he says, "with ones under ones."

"Then we add one place at a time, starting with the ones."

Learn it: line up the places

Write 3,458 above 2,375 so each place lines up.

  3,458
+ 2,375
-------
  5,833

Ones: 8 + 5 = 13. Write 3 and regroup 1 ten.

Tens: 5 + 7 + 1 = 13. Write 3 and regroup 1 hundred.

Hundreds: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8.

Thousands: 3 + 2 = 5.

So 3,458 + 2,375 = 5,833.

Ten ones make a new ten. Ten tens make a new hundred. That is regrouping.

ADD THE NUMBERS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
3,458 + 2,375 = ?
2,614 + 5,173 = ?
4,709 + 3,286 = ?
6,845 + 1,597 = ?

Learn it: different lengths

To add 4,206 + 593, put the 3 under the 6.

The 593 has no thousands, so the 4 thousands come straight down.

  4,206
+ 593
-------
  4,799
THINK ABOUT THE PLACES
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
In 4,206 + 593, which place is the 5 in?
Ones: 8 + 5 = 13. What do you write in the ones place?
Tens: 6 + 7 + 1 = 14. How many hundreds do you regroup?
4,206 + 593 = ?

Try it
Count your steps from one room to another.
Then count your steps back.
Write both numbers in a column and add them.
Write 3,458 + 2,375 in a column and show each regroup.

Great adding! Tomorrow we add even bigger numbers.
