Number Hunt
// Place value to one million
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Bennie and Ferris pack a notebook and two pencils for a walk.

"Today we hunt for big numbers," says Bennie.

"Numbers hide in lots of places, like signs, maps and the backs of books."

Ferris spots a sign that says the summit is 1,250 meters high.

"That is a four-digit number!" he says.

"Can you round it to the nearest hundred?" asks Bennie.

Ferris thinks for a moment, then smiles. "About 1,300 meters."

Hunt for big numbers

Look around your home or neighborhood with a grown-up.

Find numbers with four or more digits.

Write each one down and read it out loud.

◇ BUILD THE BIGGEST NUMBER
Write the digits 3, 8, 0, 5, 1 and 6 on six slips of paper.
Each of you makes the greatest six-digit number you can.
The greatest is 865,310. Did you find it?
Now make the smallest number that does not start with 0.
Draw one place where you found a big number, and write the number.
For a grown-up
This week your child worked with numbers up to one million.
Each place is worth ten times the place to its right.
Ask your child to read a big number aloud and say what one digit is worth.
Rounding helps us say about how many.

Great hunting! Next week Chris helps us add and subtract big numbers.
