Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Scaled graphs, rulers and line plots
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Lizzy and Bennie head into the garden with a ruler and a notebook.

"Let us measure things we find," says Lizzy.

"Then we can make a line plot of our data."

Bennie picks up a smooth stick and lines it up with 0.

"This one is 2 1/2 inches," he says.

Lizzy writes it down. "One X for the stick!"

Hunt for things to measure

Find small things at home or outside with a grown-up.

Measure each one to the nearest half or fourth inch.

Make a line plot of your lengths.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find six small things, like leaves, sticks, crayons or spoons.
Measure each one with a ruler in inches.
Write each length in a list.
Make a line plot with an X above each length.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A ruler from 0 to 3 inches in fourths, with a dotA stick starts at 0 and ends at the dot. How long is it?
A bar graph, Leaves Lizzy found: Oak 35, Maple 20, Elm 45How many maple leaves did Lizzy find?
Each star is 5 bugs. A row has 3 stars. How many bugs?
◇ GRAPH IT WITH A GROWN-UP
Ask everyone at home to pick a favorite fruit.
Make a picture graph where one star stands for 2 votes.
Ask each other one "how many more" question.
Answer it using the key.
Draw your line plot from the hunt.
For a grown-up
This week your child read scaled picture graphs and bar graphs.
They measured to the half and fourth inch and made line plots.
Ask them what the key in a graph means.
Let them measure a few things with a ruler and explain each length.

Great hunting! Next week Hazel helps us find area.
