Monday: Scaled picture graphs

Lizzy the Lizard tips back her sun hat and opens her notebook.

"I counted the bugs in the meadow," she says.

"There were so many that my graph ran off the page!"

Bennie the Bear looks at her long rows of pictures.

"Try a key," he says. "Let one star stand for 5 bugs."

Lizzy grins. "Then 30 ants only need 6 stars!"

Learn it: one picture stands for many

A picture graph uses pictures to show data.

In a scaled picture graph, the key says what one picture means.

In Lizzy's graph, each star stands for 5 bugs.

BugCount (each ★ is 5)
Ants★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Bees★ ★ ★
Beetles★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Snails★ ★

The ants have 6 stars. Count by fives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.

So Lizzy saw 30 ants. That is 6 × 5 = 30.

READ THE BUG GRAPH
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many ants did Lizzy see?
How many bees did Lizzy see?
How many beetles did Lizzy see?
How many snails did Lizzy see?
HOW MANY MORE? HOW MANY FEWER?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many more ants than snails did Lizzy see?
How many fewer bees than beetles did Lizzy see?
How many bugs did Lizzy see in all?
Each star is 5 bugs. How many stars would show 40 bugs?

Another key: each star is 2 votes

Bennie asked friends to vote for a favorite fruit. Each star is 2 votes.

FruitCount (each ★ is 2)

Pears★ ★ ★
Plums★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

READ THE FRUIT GRAPH
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many votes for plums?
How many votes for pears?
How many more votes for plums than for peaches?
How many friends voted in all?
ORDER THE BUGS
  • Look at the bug graph.
  • Put the bugs from fewest to most.

SentenceTrue or false?
The key tells what one picture stands for.?
6 × 5 = 30?
In the fruit graph, 3 stars stand for 3 votes.?
15 + 10 = 30?
WHY THIS EXERCISEEach fruit star is 2 votes, so 3 stars are 6 votes. And 15 + 10 is 25.
Try it
Count the spoons, forks and cups in your kitchen.
Make a picture graph where one star stands for 2 things.
Write the key at the top.
Draw a picture graph of three things at home. Use a key.

Great graphing! Tomorrow Lizzy shows us scaled bar graphs.
