Monday: Time to the minute

Rosie the Rabbit bounces up to the big clock by the garden gate.

"The seed swap starts at 4:37!" she cheers.

"But I cannot find a 37 on this clock."

Bennie the Bear sets down his basket of apples.

"Each small mark is one minute," he says.

"Count the big numbers by fives, then count the small marks by ones."

Rosie wiggles her long ears. "Let us find 4:37 together!"

Learn it: count by fives, then by ones

The short hand shows the hour. The long hand shows the minutes.

There are 60 small marks around the clock, one for each minute.

From one big number to the next is 5 minutes.

A clock showing 4:37

Bennie reads this clock.

The short hand is past the 4, so the hour is 4.

The long hand is 2 marks past the 7.

Count by fives to the 7: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.

Then count on 2 ones: 36, 37.

The time is 4:37.
