⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Donnie and Bennie walk to the garden with a basket.

"Let us hunt for fractions that are equal," says Donnie.

Bennie finds a tray with 8 cups. Four cups hold apples.

"4/8 of the tray holds apples," says Bennie.

Donnie looks carefully. "That is the same as 1/2!"

Hunt for equal and greater fractions

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find things split into equal parts.

Name each fraction two ways if you can.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a tray, a window or a carton with equal parts.
Fill or point to half of the parts.
Name the fraction two ways, like 3/6 and 1/2.
Compare two fractions of the same thing. Which is greater?
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
1/2 = ?/6
1/4 ? 1/2
3/3 = ?
◇ FOLD AND COMPARE
Each of you folds a same-size paper strip.
One person folds halves. The other folds fourths.
Color 1/2 and 2/4. Lay the strips side by side.
Then color 1/4 and compare it with 1/2.
Draw something you found with equal parts. Write two names for one fraction.
For a grown-up
This week your child learned that 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 are equivalent.
They wrote whole numbers as fractions, like 3 = 3/1 and 4/4 = 1.
They compared fractions with the same top or the same bottom number.
Ask: which is greater, 1/3 or 1/8, and why?

Great hunting! Next week Rosie helps us tell time and measure.
