Tuesday: Many parts: a/b

Riley lays out his strip, now cut into 4 equal pieces.

"One piece goes to Hazel, one to Lucy and one to Donnie," he says.

"What fraction of the strip did I give away?"

Bennie counts the pieces. "One fourth, two fourths, three fourths."

"You gave away 3/4 of the strip, Riley."

Riley holds up the last piece. "And 1/4 is left for me!"

Learn it: count the unit fractions

Each piece is 1/4 of the strip.

3 pieces of size 1/4 make 3/4.

A bar cut into four equal parts, three shaded

In 3/4, the 4 tells the size of each part: fourths.

The 3 counts how many fourths we have.

Count them: one fourth, two fourths, three fourths.

A bar cut into eight equal parts, five shaded

This strip has 8 equal parts with 5 shaded. That is 5/8.
