Thursday: The lantern count

Chris the Coyote settles by the campfire.

"One evening, Oliver hung lanterns along the trail," he says.

"He hung 6 rows with 5 lanterns in each row."

"Then the wind blew out 4 of them."

"Oliver did not fuss. He counted what still glowed."

"Then he checked his answer, just as a wise owl should."

Story: How many still glow?

Step 1: 6 rows of 5 is 6 × 5 = 30 lanterns.

Step 2: 4 blew out. 30 - 4 = 26.

Let g be the glowing lanterns. 6 × 5 - 4 = g, so g = 26.
