// Solve, estimate and look for patterns
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Oliver and Bennie walk through the garden with a notebook.

"Let us hunt for two-step problems," says Oliver.

"Look, 4 flower pots with 6 buds each, and 3 buds on the path."

Bennie counts. "4 × 6 = 24, and 24 + 3 = 27."

Oliver checks with an estimate. "That is close to 30, so it makes sense."

Hunt for two-step problems

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find equal groups, and then something extra or missing.

Write a two-step problem about it.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a place with equal groups, like shelves or plates.
Count the groups and how many are in each.
Add or take away a few things.
Write an equation with a letter, then solve it.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A flowerThere are 4 pots of 6 buds and 3 more buds. How many buds?
About how much is 58 + 23? Round each number to the nearest ten.
Is 6 × 7 even or odd?
3, 6, 9, 12, ? What comes next?
◇ MAKE A PROBLEM FOR EACH OTHER
A grown-up tells a two-step story problem.
You solve it and write the equation with a letter.
Then you tell one, and the grown-up solves it.
Check each answer with an estimate.
Draw the equal groups you found. Write your two-step equation.
For a grown-up
This week your child solved two-step story problems.
They used a letter for the unknown, like 3 × 8 - 5 = p.
They rounded to check that answers make sense.
They also explained patterns, like why 4 times a number is even.

Great hunting! Next week Riley helps us explore fractions.
