Monday: Two-step problems

Oliver the Owl taps his pocket watch and adjusts his glasses.

"Good morning," he says. "Today we shall solve problems in two steps."

"I gathered 3 boxes of 8 pinecones. Then I gave 5 to Hazel."

"How many pinecones do I have now?"

Bennie the Bear nods slowly. "First, find how many pinecones in the boxes."

"Then take away the ones Oliver gave to Hazel."

Learn it: one step, then the next

Step 1: 3 boxes of 8 is 3 × 8 = 24 pinecones.

Step 2: Oliver gives away 5. 24 - 5 = 19.

Oliver has 19 pinecones now.

Three equal groups with eight dots in each group

We can write one equation with a letter for the unknown.

Let p stand for the pinecones Oliver has now.

3 × 8 - 5 = p, so p = 19.

FIND THE FIRST STEP
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Hazel has 4 bags of 6 stickers. She gets 7 more. How many in the bags?
Riley has 30 stones and drops 6. He shares the rest with 4 friends. How many are left after the drop?
Lucy picks 5 rows of 5 daisies, then 3 more. How many in the rows?
Donnie sees 20 birds, then 12 more. They sit in 4 equal groups. How many birds in all?
SOLVE BOTH STEPS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.

WHICH EQUATION FITS?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Oliver has 3 boxes of 8 pinecones. He gives away 5. Let p be what is left.
An appleBennie has 6 baskets of 4 apples. He finds 10 more. Let a be the total.
A shellRiley has 40 shells. He gives 4 friends 5 shells each. Let s be what is left.
SOLVE A TWO-STEP PROBLEM
  • Think about how Oliver solves problems.
  • Tap the steps in order.

SentenceTrue or false?
3 × 8 - 5 = 19?
4 × 6 + 7 = 31?
5 × 5 + 3 = 30?
40 - 4 × 5 = 20?
WHY THIS EXERCISE5 × 5 + 3 is 28, not 30.
Try it
Make 3 piles of 4 spoons or blocks.
Add 2 more to the table.
Write an equation with a letter for the total.
Count to check it.
Draw Oliver's 3 boxes of 8 pinecones. Cross out the 5 he gives away.

Splendid work! Tomorrow we check answers by estimating.
