Number Hunt
// Unknowns, turn-arounds and break-aparts
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Samantha and Bennie set off with a notebook and a pencil.

"Let us hunt for arrays and turn them around," says Samantha.

"A window might be 2 rows of 3, or 3 rows of 2."

Bennie adds, "And a big array can be broken into two small ones."

"Every one we find gets a fact and a turn-around fact!"

Hunt for arrays to turn and break

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find things in equal rows.

Write a fact and its turn-around fact for each one.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find an array, like floor tiles, window panes or a muffin tin.
Write its multiplication, then the turn-around fact.
Cover part of it with your hand and break it apart.
Write a mystery sentence with a ? for a grown-up to solve.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
6 × ? = 30
? ÷ 4 = 7
3 × 8 = 8 × ?
A rectangle of unit squares, four rows of seven, split into 5 and 2 columns4 × 7 = ?
◇ MYSTERY FACTS WITH A GROWN-UP
Take turns writing a fact with one number hidden.
Your partner finds the hidden number.
Then your partner says the turn-around fact.
Play until you each have solved five.
On paper, draw one array you found. Write two facts for it.
For a grown-up
This week your child found unknown numbers, like 8 × ? = 48.
They learned that 4 × 6 and 6 × 4 have the same product.
They broke a hard fact into two easier ones.
For example, 8 × 7 = 40 + 16.
Ask them to explain how a fact they know helps with a new one.

Great hunting! Next week Bruce brings a times table challenge.
