Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Fair shares and equal groups
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Lucy and Bennie walk through the garden with a notebook.

"Let us hunt for things we can share fairly," says Lucy.

"Like a bowl of grapes, or a pile of leaves."

Bennie adds, "Or things we can pack in equal groups."

"We will write a division for each one!" says Lucy.

Hunt for things to share

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find a group of things you could share or pack.

Write the division for each one.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a group of 10 to 30 things, like crayons, spoons or leaves.
Share them fairly among the people at home. Is anything left?
Now pack them in groups of 2. How many groups?
Write a division for each way.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Three friends share 24 grapes. How many each?
An appleBennie packs 30 apples in bags of 6. How many bags?
Which fact helps you find 49 ÷ 7?
Lucy packs 16 leaves in piles of 4. What do we look for?
◇ SHARE IT WITH A GROWN-UP
Your grown-up counts out 12, 18 or 24 small things.
You choose: share them fairly or make equal groups.
Say the division and the quotient.
Check it with a multiplication fact together.
On paper, draw one thing you shared fairly on your hunt.
For a grown-up
This week your child learned two meanings of division.
18 ÷ 3 can mean 3 fair shares, or groups of 3.
Both answers are 6, but the stories are different.
Ask them which multiplication fact helps with each division.

Great hunting! Next week Samantha helps us find missing numbers.
