Saturday: Number Hunt

Bennie and Riley set off with a notebook and a pencil.

"Let us hunt for big numbers," says Riley.

"We can find them in books, on calendars and on signs."

Bennie smiles. "When we find one, we round it."

"Then we add two of them together," says Riley.

"And we check with rounding!"

Hunt for big numbers

Look around your home with a grown-up.

Find numbers from 100 to 999.

Write each one in your notebook.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find three numbers from 100 to 999 at home.
Round each one to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred.
Add two of your numbers.
Subtract the smaller number from the bigger one.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Round 674 to the nearest ten.
Round 674 to the nearest hundred.
348 + 251 = ?
520 - 184 = ?
◇ ROUND AND ADD WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you writes a number from 100 to 499.
Round both numbers to the nearest hundred and add them.
Then add the real numbers, one place at a time.
Are the two answers close? Talk about why.
On paper, draw one place where you found a big number.
For a grown-up
This week your child rounded numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.
They added and subtracted within 1,000, one place at a time.
Ask them to explain a trade, like 1 ten for 10 ones.
Rounding first helps them see if an answer makes sense.

Great hunting! Next week Chris helps us multiply.
