Number Hunt

Number Hunt: big numbers
// Hundreds with hundreds, tens with tens, ones with ones
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Rosie the Rabbit bounces into the garden with Bennie the Bear.

"Big numbers are hiding everywhere," Rosie says.

"Books have page numbers in the hundreds."

Bennie nods. "Let us find two big numbers and add them!"

"Then we can subtract them too," says Rosie.

Hunt for big numbers

Look for numbers with three digits at home.

Big books have page numbers in the hundreds.

Boxes and jars often have big numbers too.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find a page number with three digits.
Say its hundreds, tens and ones.
Find a second big number.
Add the two numbers on paper.
Which number is bigger? Subtract to find how much.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
When we add big numbers, which place do we add first?
How many ones do we trade for 1 ten?
318 + 254 = ?
746 - 329 = ?
◇ ADD AND SUBTRACT WITH A GROWN-UP
Your grown-up writes a number from 100 to 500.
You write another number from 100 to 400.
Add the numbers together on paper.
Then take the smaller number from the bigger one.
Trade jobs and play again.
Draw your two big numbers with squares, lines and dots.
For a grown-up
This week your child added and subtracted numbers to 1000.
They work one place at a time: ones, tens, then hundreds.
Ten ones make a ten, and ten tens make a hundred.
Ask them to explain each trade out loud.

Great hunting! Next week Lizzy helps us measure.
