Thursday

The firefly meadow
// Take away tens and ones
⏱ about 15 min

Thursday: The firefly meadow

Chris the Coyote settles by the fire with his satchel.

"One summer night, Donnie counted fireflies in the meadow," he says.

"There were 64 of them, glowing softly."

"Then a breeze came, and 28 fireflies floated away."

"Donnie wondered how many fireflies stayed to glow with him."

Story: Fireflies in the meadow

There were 64 fireflies.

28 floated away.

There are not enough ones, so break a ten.

5 tens and 14 ones. Now 14 - 8 = 6.

5 tens - 2 tens = 3 tens.

So 36 fireflies stayed.

Base-ten blocks: 3 tens and 6 ones
