Number Hunt
// Take away tens and ones
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Donnie and Bennie walk the trail with a notebook.

"Let us hunt for groups that get smaller," says Donnie.

"Leaves fall and birds fly away."

Bennie nods. "We can count what is left."

"Then we can check our answers by adding back!"

Hunt for take-away stories

Look around your home or yard with a grown-up.

Find a group, then take some away.

◇ SUBTRACT WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you writes a number from 50 to 99.
Take away a number from 10 to 40.
Check each other by adding back.
Take turns five times.
Draw a group you found. Cross out the ones that went away.
For a grown-up
This week your child subtracted numbers within 100.
They broke a ten into ten ones when needed.
Ask them to check each answer by adding.
Ask, "Why does breaking a ten still work?"

Great hunting! Next week Rosie helps us add bigger numbers.
