Monday: Add in a story

Chris the Coyote walks up the trail with his storyteller bag.

"I collect acorns for my stories," he says. "I have 24 acorns."

Bennie the Bear finds 5 more acorns under a tree.

"Here you go, Chris," says Bennie.

"Now how many acorns do I have?" asks Chris.

Learn it: solve a story problem

Read the story. Find the numbers 24 and 5.

The group gets bigger, so we add.

Write the number sentence: 24 + 5 = ?

Count on 5 from 24: 25, 26, 27, 28, 29.

Base-ten blocks: 2 tens and 9 ones

2 tens and 9 ones is 29. Chris has 29 acorns.
