Saturday: Number Hunt

Bennie the Bear puts on his hat and grabs his basket.

"Today we hunt for fact families at home," he says.

"Find two groups of things, then count them together."

"Can you say all four facts for each family you find?"

Hunt for fact families

Find two small groups of things at home.

Count each group. Then count them all together.

Say the two add facts and the two take away facts.

Find two groups of shoes by the door.
Find two groups of spoons in a drawer.
Find two groups of books on a shelf.
For each one, say a fact family.

What is a fact family?
A ten-frame with nine red counters and one gold counter9 + 6 = 10 + ?
7 + 8 = ?
9 + ? = 14
◇ FACT FAMILY GAME
Your grown-up puts out two groups of spoons.
You say the sum of both groups.
Then say one take away fact for the family.
Switch jobs and play five times.
Draw your best fact family from the hunt.
For a grown-up
This week your child added and subtracted within 20.
Ask how they got an answer, not just the answer.
Good tricks are make a ten, doubles and thinking addition.
Counting on fingers is fine while new facts settle in.
