Bennie has 8 apples and Lucy the Ladybug has 5.
"Let us put them together," says Lucy.
"First, fill the ten," says Bennie.

Look at 8 + 5.
8 needs 2 more to make 10.
Break 5 into 2 and 3.
8 + 2 = 10. Then 10 + 3 = 13.
