Number Hunt

Number Hunt
// Bennie fills the ten-frame
⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Bennie picks up his apple basket.

"Let us hunt for tens at home," he says.

"Then we can add and take away with them."

Hunt for tens

Look for groups of 10 at home.

Ten fingers. Ten toes. Ten blocks.

Make a ten, then count the rest.

Two ten-frames: one full, and six more counters

10 and 6 more make 16.

Try it: Number Hunt
Count 10 spoons. Add 4 more. How many?
Find 12 toys. Take away 2. Is it 10?
Count 9 books. How many more make 10?
Find 15 rocks. Take away 5. How many left?

◇ TEN-FRAME GAME WITH A GROWN-UP
Draw a ten-frame on paper together.
Your grown-up puts some spoons on it.
You say how many more make 10.
Then add a few more and say the total.
Take turns five times.
Draw two ten-frames. Show 9 + 4.
For a grown-up
This week your child learned to make a ten.
For 8 + 5, think 8 + 2 + 3.
For 13 - 4, think 13 - 3 - 1.
Fingers and spoons are great helpers.

Great hunting! Next week Samantha brings tens and ones.
