Crew Quest: Packet relay

It is Saturday at Beacon Station.

Rocket tears a drawing into pieces. "Packets!"

Raven numbers each piece. "What do you notice?"

Nova glows. "Hint: numbers help put them back."

  1. Wi-Fi uses radio waves through the air.
  2. The internet is many computers connected together.
  3. Messages travel in small pieces called packets.
  4. A grown-up keeps the Wi-Fi password private.
◇ FAMILY PACKET RELAY
Draw a simple picture on paper.
Tear it into four or five pieces.
Write a number on the back of each piece.
Mix the pieces up.
Hand them to a family member one at a time.
They put the picture back in order.
Hide one piece. What happens? Send it again!
Safety first
Tear paper by hand. No scissors.
Ask a grown-up before using any paper.
Keep small pieces away from babies and pets.
For a grown-up
Hand over the pieces out of order on purpose.
Ask: how did the numbers help?
Talk about why you keep the Wi-Fi password.
