Family Helper Day: Tidy race at home

Saturday in Fern Hollow. Samantha holds the timer.

"Your room, your race!" she says.

Rosie cheers. "Ten minutes, helpers. Go!"

  1. Sort things into piles: toys, books, clothes.
  2. Put each pile in its home.
  3. Wipe with a damp cloth. Water only.
  4. A grown-up sets the timer. Walk, never run.
◇ FAMILY TIDY RACE
Pick one room or one corner.
Your grown-up sets the timer for ten minutes.
Sort into piles together. Count each pile.
Your child carries piles home. You reach high spots.
You wet the cloth. Your child squeezes and wipes.
When it rings, stop and say done together!
Safety first
Walk, never run, during the race.
A grown-up wets the cloth and handles any spray.
Tell a grown-up about anything broken or sharp.
For a grown-up
Keep it small: one corner is plenty.
Ask: how many things are in this pile?
Praise the sorting, not just the finish.
Try the race again next week with a new corner.
