Freddy the Frog hops too fast on the den steps and scuffs his knee. "Ow."
Bruce is there in a flash. "Stop. Sit down." Freddy stops.
"Now wash it with warm water and soap." Freddy washes. "Now cover it." Bruce hands him a clean bandage.
"Now tell." Freddy calls to his grown-up. Bruce nods. "Stop, wash, cover, tell. Four steps, every scrape."
A scrape is a small hurt on the skin, like a scuffed knee or elbow. Scrapes happen to every helper.
There are four steps, and they always go in the same order.
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Stop | Moving around can make a small hurt bigger |
| Wash | Warm water and soap clean out dirt |
| Cover | A clean bandage keeps dirt off while it heals |
| Tell | A grown-up decides if it needs more care |
Some hurts are bigger than a scrape. A deep cut, a bump on the head, or a bad fall.
For those, skip straight to Tell. Call your grown-up right away and stay still. Your grown-up decides what happens next.
