Riley and his grown-up are home from the store. Riley grabs the biggest bag with one paw and swings it.
Thump. An apple rolls across the floor.
His grown-up laughs kindly. "Two paws, light bag, slow feet. And cold things go away first."
Riley tries again. Two paws. He walks. He finds the frozen peas and gets them into the freezer before anything else. Nothing rolls.
Cold things first. Frozen food melts and cold food warms, so they go away before anything else.
Then fruit and vegetables. Then cans and boxes. Home things like soap go last.
When you put new things on a shelf, slide the old ones to the front. New ones go at the back. That way the oldest gets used first.
| Order | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Frozen food | Freezer |
| 2 | Cold food | Fridge |
| 3 | Fruit and vegetables | Bowl, drawer or fridge |
| 4 | Cans and boxes | Pantry shelf, heavy on the low shelf |
| 5 | Home things | Cleaning cabinet or closet |
When new food goes on a shelf, slide the older food to the front. Put the new behind it.
This is called rotating. Stores do it too. It means the oldest food gets eaten first, and nothing gets forgotten at the back.
