Friday: When the plan slips

Freddy the Frog hops onto the den stump. "Review day! But first, a puzzle." He points at Riley the Raccoon, who looks worried.

"My plan said bed at 7:15. It is 7:30 and I just got dressed," says Riley. "The whole plan is ruined!"

Rosie the Rabbit bounces over. "Not ruined, just slipped! Plans slip for everyone." Oliver the Owl agrees. "Stay calm. Do the must-do job first. Then fix the plan."

Plans slip. That is normal.

Even good plans slip. You sleep late. A shoe goes missing. Someone needs a hand.

A slipped plan is not a failed plan. It just needs a fix. Oliver has four moves for a slipped plan.

  • Stay calm. Rushing makes mistakes, and mistakes take more time.
  • Find the must-do job. That is the job that cannot be skipped today.
  • Do the must-do job first. Move or skip a small job if you need to.
  • Tell your grown-up the plan changed. Then fix the plan for tomorrow.
FIX THE SLIP
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Riley is 15 minutes behind. What should he do first?
Riley must leave at 8:00. Which job is the must-do?
Riley skipped making the bed today. What happens to that job?

Freddy's review

Freddy the Frog holds up the week chart. "Let us see what stuck."

  1. The short hand is the hour hand. The long hand is the minute hand.
  2. Count minutes by fives at the big numbers, then by ones at the marks.
  3. Elapsed time is the minutes between a start and an end. Jump to the hour first.
  4. A plan lists jobs in order with a time for each. Add a cushion.
  5. A timer turns a long job into a short race. It tells you when to stop.
  6. When a plan slips: stay calm, do the must-do job, tell someone, fix the plan.
Which hand on the clock tells the minutes?
From 7:15 to 7:30, how many minutes pass?
What do we call extra time at the end of a plan?
