Tuesday: Serve and pass

A big bowl of salad waits on the counter. Lucy looks at it, then at her tiny arms.

"Bennie, could you carry this? Two hands, slow steps." Bennie lifts it like a treasure and sets it down softly.

Lucy turns to the table. "Now we pass. Hold the bowl with two hands. Hand it to the friend beside you. Say here you go. They say thank you." Rosie claps.

Two hands, slow feet

Serving means bringing food to the table. Passing means handing a dish to the next person.

Both use the same rule. Two hands on the dish, eyes on where you are going.

Carry one thing at a time. Walk, never run. Set it down slowly, near the middle.

  • A grown-up carries anything hot, heavy or full to the brim.
  • You can carry a basket of bread or a bowl of salad. A half full water pitcher is fine too.
  • Set serving spoons beside the bowl, handle out, so hands stay clean.
Safety first
Hot dishes are grown-up dishes. Wait until they are on the table.
If something is too heavy, say so and ask for help.

Passing around the table

  1. Everyone passes the same direction, so dishes do not crash in the middle.
  2. Hold the dish with two hands and offer it to your neighbor.
  3. Say, here you go. Your neighbor says, thank you.
  4. If you want something, ask: please pass the bread.
  5. Take a small helping first. You can ask for more later.
