Grow It Day: Plant and animal map

Rocket unrolls a big sheet of paper.

"Let us map our neighborhood!" he says.

Raven asks, "What lives near our plants?"

Nova says, "Look for food and homes."

  1. Roots can grow into cracks and break up rock.
  2. Tree roots can push up sidewalks.
  3. Roots hold soil in place.
  4. Plants give animals food, like nectar and acorns.
  5. Plants give animals homes and shelter.
◇ MAKE A PLANT AND ANIMAL MAP
Take a short walk with your grown-up.
Look for trees, bushes, grass and flowers.
Look for animals near the plants.
At home, draw your street on big paper.
Draw each plant you saw in its spot.
Draw the animals near their plants.
Draw a little food sign for plants that feed animals.
Draw a little house sign for plants that give homes.
Tell each other about your map.
Safety first
Stay with your grown-up the whole walk.
Just look. Do not pick or touch unknown plants.
Watch bees and birds from far away.
Never taste anything you find outside.
For a grown-up
Ask: which plant gave an animal food?
Ask: which plant gave an animal a home?
Praise every idea, even the silly ones.
