A root can grow into a crack in a rock.

The root gets bigger as it grows.

It pushes on the sides of the crack.

The crack gets wider and wider.

Over a long time, roots can break up rock.

Try it: Plant a bean pot

This week you start a new living thing.

You will plant beans in a pot of soil.

Then you will check on them every day.

  1. A grown-up pokes three small holes in a cup bottom.
  2. Put on your gloves.
  3. A grown-up opens the potting mix bag.
  4. Fill the cup with potting mix.
  5. Push two dry beans in, about one inch deep.
  6. Cover the beans with potting mix.
  7. Water the cup until the mix is damp.
  8. Set the cup on a plate by a sunny window.
Safety first
A grown-up pokes the holes. Holes need a sharp tool.
Wear gloves when you touch potting mix.
Only a grown-up handles the potting mix bag.
Never put beans or soil in your mouth.
Wash your hands when you finish.
